(EnergyAsia, August 26 2010, Thursday) --- Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil producer, said its crude oil output rose 1.5% to 780 million barrels last year following a marked decline in armed attacks on industry infrastructure and personnel by the country’s various disaffected groups. Between 2006 and 2009, Nigeria lost more than a quarter of its oil output to attacks by militia groups which specialise in targeting the oil industry. State-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC) attributed the improved working atmosphere in the southern Niger River delta oil region to the government’s move to disarm and provide amnesty to thousands of militants seeking control of the delta’s energy resources. Natural gas production, however, fell 19% to 1.84 billion standard cubic feet a day in 2009. |
